She is one of the first individuals on the autism spectrum to document her personal experience with autism and to make use of that experience in her professional and advocacy work. She invented the "Hug Box" or "squeeze device" to calm those on the autism spectrum. She was also the subject of the Emmy and Golden Globe winning semi-biographical film Temple Grandin.
